Colorful Fridays .....Wedge Tailed Green Pigeon.

Peering through my binoculars I spotted a green pigeon having its morning snack. It is found mainly in the Himalayas from the foothills to about 2500m .The pigeons are frugivorous. They can be spotted on fruit laden branches trying to reach to the juiciest of all the berries .

As the name suggests it has a wedge shaped green tail  with a yellowish green head and breast . The male has a maroon patch on the upper wing which is lacking  in female bird .

This pigeon has a sweet and a melodious song which is audible from far and are unmistakable .

Happy Birding
Have a colorful weekend .

The Indian Spotbills....

Spotted the Spotbill ducks
AND
admired the riot of colors ...

They are basically grey ducks with paler heads  neck and the black  bill tipped with a bright yellow .
The wings are basically whitish with white feathers below and from above show a white bordered speculum (is a patch often distinctly colored ).

Weaving a home ...

Hello world !!!!
As promised I am back with a few shots of the Weaver bird ...
A drive of about 20kms from the millenium city and you can see open fields... vast greens  which are  ofcourse  are  fast vanishing .I am talking about Basai wetlands where I spotted hordes of Baya .
Monsoons are really busy times for the  weaver birds.

The nests are built with great patience and perseversance and the task is completed in about 18 days making 500 trips using 3500 strands of rough grass. The nests are  built hanging over water bodies and often suspended from thorny Acacias .

When the nests are completed then the male baya bird invites the female birds to inspect and it  begins the display of flapping of wings and calling while hanging from their nests .

Then I spotted a snake around the Bayas nest .The snake was looking for its morning meal ...

Acrobatic juvenile Baya ....

It was a pleasure watching these yellow crowned feathers flapping ferociously.... with a wheezy
chit -chit cheeeeeeeee. Will be back soon with some more interesting clicks from the avian world .

When the orchid tree blooms ......

Thick green leaves
lovely purple flowers
Lingering  fragrance..
Sunbirds calling melliflously....

I heard  a sharp twittering halted and spotted these tiny little birds ..now by tiny I mean less than 10cms in length.I freaked out clicking these avian delights though I landed up with a pain in my shoulder for holding the camera in a tilted position upwards with 100-400mm lens .Do you have some trails and tales of birding in the Urbanscapes????

Happy Birding ....
