Bharatpur beckons.....

A world heritage site teaming with birds and wildlife- Keoladeo Ghana national park . It's a beautiful 30 sq km park of reservoir , swamps, wet and dry grasslands ! You can imagine the biodiversity there . Hordes of migratory birds make it their winter home... bar headed geese, pelicans ,whistling ducks -just to name a few guests.

Whistling ducks

I landed at Bharatpur ummm...when the migratory birds had not started arriving..That was the sad part...

There were hundreds of storks and cormorants which attended their nests at the water edges...

The surrounding woodland was also highly productive for passerines and I added to my list Brahminey starling ,pied cuckoo and a few raptors...

White-throated Kingfisher is common on the Ganges Plain, fishing in any conceivable water, from  drainage ditches to settling ponds.

While cycling down one of the trails bumped into Monitor lizard basking in the sun ....

Soon my sojourn was over and it was time to return....I had not seen most of the species I had hoped to see, all the more reason that I have to get back to Keoladeo National Park...!

Colorful Fridays.....

I have decided  to  post a bird with a specific color  on every Friday ....Color for today is -Yellow..

The first bird,  that came to my mind after deciding the color , was the vibrant yellow winged oriole...

It just flew past me and I actually wished it would just come and sit in front of me .....

and surprisingly my wish did come true..!  ...The oriole flew into the bushes a few feet away from me...and I stood mesmerized and it was looking at me ...and blessed me with its tune....the enchanting voice of the black hooded oriole..http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tG6HviVzVzY

Birding in the Lower Himalayas.....

The next day started before the break of dawn . A few hot cups of tea and I was all geared up for birding in the delightful 'Lake City'...

Spotted the Brown fish owl hiding in the leaves of moss laden branch.......

She gently flew past and a flash of colors caught my eye.....before even I could click.... heard the  ''tuk-tuk" clear and loud in silence of the forest...

There was a complete family of crested king fisher .  The pond  was like a restaurant for the kingfishers....having their morning meal.

The brown dipper-plump and chocolaty. I watched as they performed with their feet ...dippers are noted for bobbling and dipping movements.

Later in the afternoon we decided to head for Pangot. It is a small village and the drive is through dense forests which happens to be the main habitat for excellent birding in the Himalayas. The next morning kick started scanning the mountain slopes for the Koklass and Cheer pheasants.I was lucky enough to get a few precious shots of the Khalij and the Koklass pheasants but couldn't get a glimpse of the Cheer.

Khaleej pheasant....

Bird song chorus of black throated tits.....

Yellow breasted green finch....

On the bridge I stooped by to admire the rusty tailed Plumbeous redstart (tail fanned and  flicked  nervously)

Himalayan woodpecker.....
Rufous bellied woodpecker.....

)

I was tired but not tired enough having driven for seven hours ..I had feasted my eyes on beautiful landscapes and even more beautiful birds, met my birding pal from Mumbai , eaten some dynamite food  drank some obscene cups of tea...I was six  days poorer but 45 species richer...this was my trip to Sattal and Pangot...
Happy Birding...!
